Evaluation Question 1

Q.2: How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

Ans: We were required to make two ancillary products along with our main product. Our main product was a short film, titled "Ragged 2wice". It was a drama comedy and was made for young audiences, however there is no such restriction to the audiences.
For our ancillaries, we made a Film Poster and a Film Magazine Review Page. We designed both products on Adobe Photoshop CS5.

Our film poster highlights our story by giving the images of all the main characters images as a thought cloud, depicting them to be dreams. We have made Kamran wear the red tie that he wore in the film when he was ragged and told to dance. We also used the same font that we used for the title in the film. We used that font for writing the tagline, for writing the title and to write the last line, which says "Get Ragged This April". We used bright colors to show that the film does not contain much dark content. We took Kamran's picture in his uniform to show that the film is about school life. We showed the main characters in the poster because it is conventional for comedy film posters to have the main cast in the film poster, and comedy films usually have a big cast. The poster is effective because it is convincing enough to attract a person towards it because of the richness of the colors and the images, and the taglines, and would also be effective to persuade a person to watch the film.

The Magazine Review Page also had some connection to the main product. We used the heading to highlight the main theme of our short film, i.e. Ragging Rights. We also inserted two Behind The Scenes images and a snap shot from our film. We also added our film poster to this ancillary because some magazines contain the poster of the film as well. The magazine is effective because it has some eye catching images which can capture a person's attention to read the review and then probably convince the person to go watch the film. It also contains a well written review of the film and gives a positive review about it, to enable the viewer to watch it.

Q3. What have you learnt from your Audience Feedback?

Ans: Our Film Screening took place on the 9th of April 2012, Monday. It was held in our school, Beaconhouse Jubilee Campus, and along with our film all the other media students screened their films. There were some teachers in the audience and our Principal and Head Mistress sat through the whole event, along with students from grades 10, 11, 12 and the A Level students.
Audience feedback for our short film Ragged 2wice was very good. It was very encouraging to see how people received our work. Nearly all of the audience that saw our film enjoyed it. The audience feedback was very important for us in many different ways. The feedback helped us to compare the audience feedback with the audience analysis and check whether we assessed our target audience properly and if the product we produced contained the things that we believed the audience would like and exaclty how much our research and planning flourished.

  • One of the first things we learnt from the audience feedback was that if our product was something that the normal audience would be willing to watch or not, which it was. Even the teachers and other faculty members like our film, which showed that our work was received well by the audience.
  • We found out the parts that the audience liked and disliked e.g. the audience applauded for the parts where they saw Kamran, our main characters' dance scene. They seemed to like the parts where when the bullies were rubbing black paint on Kamran's face and tying ponies to his hair and making him wear a red tie. The audience liked this part mainly because of the editing of this scene.
  • We could see if the audience was entertained by our film by their applause at everything they clapped and applauded at e.g. when the students saw that Kamran was being brought in the back alley by the bullies, the audience clapped because they thought it was funny. They really enjoyed the juxtaposed shots of the teacher and principal in the film saying "Wake up Kamran!" and applauded at that as well.
  • We discovered that we were successful in entertaining the age group for which our film was intended for, which were teenagers between 13-20 years old. We also made it for both males and females, and we succeeded in entertaining both the genders also.
  • The applause and praise for our work really gave us a lot of confidence and encouragement.
  • At the end of the screening of our film, we were also able to find out from some people from the audience what our strengths were, and some who had really judged our product identified the weak points to help us make the film better. We got to know that the sound of our film was very low and some of the dialogues were difficult to understand because of that.
  • We also handed out 20 questionnaires to 20 random people, of which most have answered the questions properly.
  • The audience feedback also gave some experience of criticism and helped us to understand how the audience might like some things we would not realize they would, and how they would not like some things that we would thing they would.
Here is the audience feedback video from the screening event, which was held on 9th April.
